Our Invitation
We invite representatives from congregations, denominations, and other faith-based organizations to join us in the following commitments:
We commit to learning from the LGBTQ+ people in our congregations and our community, centering their perspectives, and allowing them to be our guides in this struggle.
We will encourage and exhort our denominations, networks, and kindred congregations and organizations to move into an ever-deepening posture of welcome, celebration, and solidarity with LBGTQ+ people.
Recognizing that solidarity requires commitment, we will “take a side” and commit to supporting LGBTQ+ people in our messaging—whether that comes from a pulpit, press-release, policy statement, etc.
Moving beyond sentiment to action, we will support LGBTQ+ people in our congregations in a material way in ways that honor their bodily needs. This may take the form of bathroom accommodations, supporting gender transitions, emergency support for LGBTQ+ homeless youth, and more.
We will discern opportunities for public witness and liberatory action. LGBTQ+ rights are being attacked at all levels of governance—from school board meetings to the Supreme Court. With whatever resources and capacities we have, we will use what is at hand to begin to bear witness and challenge systems of oppression.
We will withdraw our support from institutions and organizations that actively discriminate against LGBTQ+ people, including colleges or universities that request Title IX exemptions.
As LGBTQ+ people, particularly trans people, are the target of the current “culture war,” we will amplify the work of LGBTQ+ colleagues, particularly trans colleagues, in our midst. To the extent the trans perspective is silenced, distorted, minimized, or vilified, we will seek to amplify, clarify, champion, and celebrate the prophetic message stirring from the trans community.
